Over the last 48 hours, my little New Zealand won 3 gold medals in the rowing. Cohen and Sullivan started the gold rush by taking out the men’s double sculls, followed by Bond and Murray winning the men’s pair. Perhaps our proudest moment was when Drysdale crossed the line in the men’s single sculls after overcoming some pretty traumatic memories from his last Olympics.
To win 3 gold medals might not seem like a big deal. But for a nation of only 4.5 million it’s (literally) like hitting gold. So I doubt I’m the only kiwi who got goose bumps watching these guys cross the line. But for me, the most inspiring part is to know these guys have overcome adversity, stuck at it and believed in themselves – and managed to bring their dream of becoming an Olympic champion to life. I wonder what the world would be like if we were all so committed to staying true to our goals?
