Mind over matter

July 8, 2012 by Sarah

I ran a 10km race today. I know this might not sound like a big deal to most, but for me it felt like a small miracle. I’ve mentioned before that running and I have never been the closest of friends – in fact I’ve tried to avoid it for most of my 30 years. But given this is the year for experimentation, I thought it quite fitting to take on something I always thought I couldn’t do and run a 10km race.

I don’t know how I managed to do it but I crossed that finish line. What I do know is that somewhere between the halfway mark and the last hundred metres, magic happened. While I thought I would give in, I didn’t. And while my body felt like giving in, my mind wouldn’t have a bar of it. Plus I managed to shave a whole 3 minutes off my own personal best. Yip – that’s right, this was my second 10km run. After running my first a couple of weeks ago I realised I wanted to experience a little bit more magic!
